This Week's Inspiration 9-5-10

Perhaps I mentioned that I have been obsessing (slightly) about vintage photos. I have also been on an old timey Native American kick... so this weeks inspiration combines the best of both worlds. And of course, it never hurts to throw in a good Johnny Cash reference!

This Weeks Inspiration

As a little girl I spent many hours with my grandmother as she showed me all her dolls and the clothes that she would make for them. She was surrounded by bits of lace and scraps of fabric as she meticulously hand sewed tiny little skirts and aprons. She showed me how to make clothespin dolls and I remember sitting quietly for hours with her snipping and sewing and gluing my own little dolls. She was a kind woman and she taught me many things. She taught me how to garden and the importance of beauty with her amazing flowers. She taught me how to make an apple head doll, that you should surround yourself with things you love and how great coca-cola tastes with vanilla ice cream. She taught me to be strong and strive to be wise and that you can do it on your own, but most importantly she taught me that women should never wear horizontal stripes and all good little dollies wear underpants.

Another amazing woman in my life was my Aunt Rose. She helped my grandmother take care of her girls when their father left. She was like a second parent to my mom and a wonderful joy to me and my sisters when we were young. She was Texas through and through. Every time she came to visit she would pull out an invisible jar and ask me and my sisters to give her kisses all over her face. She would then "peel" them from her face and put them in her "jar" explaining that now she had a stash of kisses to take home with her. She played for hours with us. An all time favorite Rose quote was "P'like I'm a pussycat, prrr prrr". She encouraged my artistic endeavours and never spoke an unkind word to anyone.... that I know of.

Lately I have been inspired by WWII era photos and family history. These two amazing women are my awesome inspiration of the week.

Guinness Cookies

I am going insane over these cookies! My Guinness icing is something of a wonder. When you pipe it on the cookie it looks like the foam on the top of a pint! The taste is subtle, but it is defiantly there! It's like if you fell asleep in a frothy, marshmallowy, dreamy cloud of Guinness foam. Awwww.

I am working out a Guinness cookie. I am really excited about a rich, dark cookie with "foam" on the top! Yum!

Saint Pat's

I love St. Patrick's Day, so to honor the up coming event I present you with this! The St. Patty's Tattoo Cookie! These guys are a little larger than my heart cookies and have Guinness flavored royal icing! I also have an Irish Cream flavoring in the works. Oh yeah!

I don't know if I'm feelin' the brown shading on the banner. I need to do a few more experiments I think... what do you think?

Stir fried and served over whole wheat pasta! Bok choi is amazing! And, of course, everything requires 3 times the amount of garlic than most people think it should!

Custom Nesting Doll Order

This is a custom order of nesting dolls I did for a gal back in January. I ended up falling in love with these little guys. I think it is a very interesting collection of people. After I had finished I thought that whoever this guy was she was giving them to was quite a character. I wanted to know him. I don't think I would have ever made a teeny tiny portrait of Proust unless I had the pleasure of working with her. I love doing custom work. It's amazing to me what can be created when you put two heads together.
